PERSONAL NOTE: We change the label every year to best suit the feeling I think the wine is giving. The photo for the 2016 vintage was taken by Doreen Pfeiffer from The Cow Artworks in Johannesburg. It’s an original print of a photo taken of an artwork by tragically murdered street artist “Moody”. We love the piece and would like to use his artwork (it has since been removed from the wall) to pay homage to him and also the Rhino that is the centre piece of his artwork.

VIGNERONS: Craig & Carla Hawkins

LOCATION (village and region): Eendekuil, Piketberg Swartland

(MESO)CLIMATE: Mediterranean

TERROIR: (type of soil, exposition, altitude, Area), Decomposed Granite, North facing, 200m above sea level, from the Paardeberg.

VITICULTURE: Planted in 1972, dryland bush vine (un-trellised), farmed organically. The vineyard is a special one as it has been farmed organically since 2001 and every year, good or bad, gives a tension we sometimes don’t find in our other wines (as much). This I think is due to the high percentage of quartz/silica in the soil.

GRAPE: 100% Chenin Blanc

YIELDS (hectolitre per hectare): 25-30hl/ha

VINIFICATION: Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. Fermented/Aged in a 3000l old French Foudre. No yeast (or other) inoculation or additives apart from a small amount of SO2 shortly before bottling. Ambient fermentation (the juice/ wine is not cooled). 100% malolactic fermentation. Not filtered or fined.

TECHNICAL: Alc 11.84% TA 5.19g/l pH 3.39 RS 1.71g/l VA 0.54g/l fSO2 6ppm tSO2 27ppm
