The Cubillo vineyard

Viña Cubillo wines come from the vineyard called Viña Cubillas, some 4 km away from the bodega, which as with all of the other vineyards, was bought by our founder. Historically these wines were called “Special Harvest”. The Vina Cubillas vines have an average age of 40 years. The soil is from the terciary age and is a mixture of clay and limestone. Viña Cubillas covers 24 ha, of which 16 ha are under Tempranillo, 4 ha Garnacha, 2 ha Mazuelo and 2 ha Graciano.
With parcels called “La Encina” and “La Monja”, Viña Cubillas is a vineyard that produces exceptional wines sold as Crianza. These wines could be easily be marketed as Gran Reservas due to the exceptional combination of soil, aspect and vines.
Characteristics of the vintage:
EXCELLENT VINTAGE. In that year it rained very little in comparison to an average year. June was very cold and, as a consequence, the budding as well as the fecundation were affected reducing the quantity all over Rioja in general and in our vineyards in particular. Harvest started September 27th with white grapes and October 4th with reds. It lasted until October 20th. The weather conditions during the harvest were perfect and we could harvest grapes in excellent condition and of a quality that will develop into exceptional wines with a great capacity to age and very characteristic of a great cool Rioja vintage.
Colour: Clear, bright ruby. Nose: Fresh and slight aroma to licorice with consistent texture and persistent aroma. Taste: Smooth, fresh and persistent.
Tempranillo (65%), Garnacho (25%), Mazuelo and Graciano, the rest, all from our own vineyards.
Ageing period in barrels:
3 years, being racked twice per year and fined with fresh egg whites.
Ageing period in bottle:
Rest, unfiltered, bottled in 75oml bottles.
Alcohol Volume: 13.5% Vol.
Total Acidity: 6g/l.
Residual Sugar: Very Dry.
Perfect with all meat dishes, tapas and charcutery.
Ready to drink now, it can be stored a few more years in conditions of constant temperature (57ºF / 14ºC) and humidity (75-80%).
18 – 20ºC, always depending on mood and place.
Quantity produced: 90,000 bottles.
